After a bye week in the BCEHL (although the team suited up for five games in the U18 Prep Island Classic in Victoria), the U18 AAA Greater Vancouver Canadians participated in a showcase weekend at the Abbotsford Centre over the weekend, the league’s first showcase event of the season featuring all eight teams.

Unfortunately, the Canadians saw their three-game unbeaten streak (2-0-1) come to an end, as they fell 6-5 in overtime to Cariboo on Saturday and 6-2 to the Vancouver NW Hawks on Sunday.

On Saturday, Sorash Ramlal scored a hat trick for GVC, including two goals in the third, which tied the game 4-4 and put the Canadians up 5-4 midway through the period. The Cougars, however, tied the game with 5:49 left on the power play, and the won it with 2:18 remaining in OT. Alan Peregrym made 30 saves for the Canadians, including 15 in the second period. A.J. Abell and Joshua Mytton also scored for GVC. Abell, Kaden Meyer, and Cohen Smith each also added two assists.

On Sunday against the Hawks, GVC got goals from Kaden Meyer and Luca Martyniuk, but that was not enough as the Canadians lost their second straight. Liam Leslie stopped 32 shots he faced, including 13 in the second period.

With the hat trick on Saturday, Ramlal now has seven goals, second on the team behind Martyniuk’s nine. Meyer, meanwhile, leads the team with 17 assists and 21 points. Among defensemen, Cohen Smith’s 10 assists and 13 points are second on the team behind Meyer.

Through 16 games, the Canadians are 7-5-2-2, tied for fourth with 18 points, but just one point out of third and six out of first place.

Up next, the U18 Canadians take on the first-place Cougars (11-3-1-1) again, looking to close the gap in the standings, as they play a two-game series on Nov. 30-Dec. 1 in Prince George. Both games will be at the Kin Centre, with the Saturday game at 6:30 p.m. and the Sunday game at 10:30 a.m. Both games can be seen on playfullscreen.com
