U15 Canadians Lose High-Scoring Affair in Shootout
The U15 AAA Greater Vancouver Canadians earned their first point of the season on Saturday (Nov. 29), battling back against the Vancouver North West Hawks before ultimately losing 6-5 in a shootout.
The Hawks opened the scoring midway through the first period, but the Canadians took a 2-1 lead on goals by Zonglin Li and Jack Mah Ming. After the Hawks tied it midway through the second, Carter DeWolff gave GVC a 3-2 lead with 5:33 left in the period.
Vancouver North West then scored twice in the final 3:18 of the second to take a 4-3 lead at the intermission, but Mah Ming and Li both scored their second goals of the game in the third period for a 5-4 advantage.
Alas, the Hawks tied things up with 3:03 remaining, and neither team scored in overtime, sending the game to the shootout, a new addition to the BCEHL this season. The Hawks won 2-1 in the shootout round, winning the contest 6-5.
Ryder Cook made 40 saves in goal for the Canadians, who are 0-14-0-1 on the season.
Through 15 games this season, Mah Ming leads the team with five goals and nine points. Among blueliners, DeWolff’s four goals and six points are tops on the team. Magnus King’s five assists lead all GVC players, while Kayvon Salamatian’s seven points are second.
The U15 Canadians will not play another BCEHL league game again until the weekend of Dec. 13-14, when they face the Okanagan Rockets in Kelowna. Both matchups are set for MNP Place, with Saturday's game at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday's rematch at 10:00 a.m.
