U17 Canadians Earn A Point in Final Action Before Christmas Break in Prince George
The U17 AAA Greater Vancouver Canadians picked up one point in their weekend series (Dec. 6-7) in Prince George, losing 3-2 in overtime on Saturday and then 6-1 on Sunday against the second-place Cariboo Cougars.
Both games took place at Prince George’s Kin Centre, marking the Canadians’ final BCEHL games before the Christmas break.
Through 24 games, the Canadians are 8-13-3-0, good for 19 points. Although they are tied with the Valley West Giants for seventh in the standings, the Giants (8-8-1-2) do have five games in hand.
In Saturday’s series opener, Zacary Prokop and Robert Andrej Filc scored for GVC, but the Cougars clawed back from a pair of one-goal deficits, forcing overtime with a power-play marker late in regulation. Although Joshua Read made 37 saves, it wasn’t enough as the Cougars scored the game-winner in overtime. Prokop’s goal—his second of the season—came unassisted, while Koen Lee recorded the lone helper on Filc’s fifth.
On Sunday, Maxwell Clemens scored his ninth goal of the season, but that was all the Canadians could generate offensively. The Cougars scored two goals in each of the three periods to come away with a convincing victory, firing 39 shots against the tandem of Wilfred Hogan and Kaz Patrick-Russell. Brian Woolfenden and Noah Law picked up the assists on Clemens’s goal.
After 24 games, Woolfenden leads the team with 11 goals, 16 assists, and 27 points. Clemens is second on the club with nine goals and 14 points. Boden Spratley leads all GVC defensemen with four goals, six assists, and 10 points.
The U17 Canadians’ next BCEHL action will be on Sunday, January 11 at 11:15 a.m. against the Valley West Giants at the Richmond Olympic Oval. They have 12 games remaining on their regular-season schedule.
