U17 Canadians Take Hawks to Overtime Twice Over Weekend

The U17 AAA Greater Vancouver Canadians fought hard in both games of their home-and-home series against the Vancouver NW Hawks over the weekend (Nov. 29-30), before ultimately dropping both in overtime.

Through 22 games, the eighth-place Canadians are 8-12-2-0, but just one point out of sixth and three out of fifth.

On Saturday at the Canlan Ice Sports North Shore, the Canadians scored twice in the third period to overcome a 3-1 deficit, but the Hawks scored the game-winner just 47 seconds into overtime for a 4-3 victory. Robert Andrej Filc scored short-handed for GVC in the first period, before Markus Sivak and Sam Johnston got key third-period goals to tie the game. Keenan Mak, Beckett Wong, Domenic Piperni, Koen Lee, and Zacary Prokop picked up assists for GVC. Wilfred Hogan played well in the Canadians net in the defeat.

On Sunday at the Richmond Olympic Oval, Noah Law’s tying goal late in the third period forced a second overtime game in as many games, and the Hawks again notched the OT winner to win 3-2 and complete the weekend series sweep. Brian Woolfenden also scored for the Canadians, his 11th of the season. Joshua Read made 31 saves for GVC in the loss.

At the 22-game mark of the season, Woolfenden is the club leader in goals (11), assists (14), and points (25). Maxwell Clemens is second in goals (eight) and points (13), while Leander Han is second in assists (nine). Among GVC defensemen, Boden Spratley leads in all three categories, with four goals, six assists, and 10 points.

Next up, the U17 Canadians will take on the Cariboo Cougars this weekend (Dec. 6-7) in Prince George, with the Saturday game at 6:00 p.m. and the Sunday rematch at 10:45 a.m. Both games will be held at the Kin Centre.
