U17 Canadians Take Two of Three This Weekend

The U17 AAA Greater Vancouver Canadians won two of their three games this past weekend (Nov. 7-9), with both victories coming in one-goal contests.

On Friday at the Richmond Olympic Oval, the Canadians defeated the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds 3-2, with Wilfred Hogan making 42 saves and Boden Spratley notching the game-winner in the third period. Leander Han opened the scoring in the first period before Fraser Valley got the next two goals. Maxwell Clemens, though, tied the game with 3:33 left in the second before Spratley scored the tie-breaking goal early in the third. Spratley also picked up an assist for a two-point night, while Brian Woolfenden had two assists as well.

The Canadians then took on the Vancouver NW Hawks for a home-and-home series beginning on Saturday night at the Canlan Ice Sports in North Vancouver. Although Kaz Patrick-Russell played well in the GVC nets, he didn’t get enough offensive support as the Canadians fell 3-1. Robert Andrej Filc scored late in the second period for the Canadians, their only goal of the night.

On Sunday at the Oval, the duo of Spratley and Hogan once again came through for the Canadians. Hogan turned aside another 28 shots in the GVC nets, while Spratley scored the overtime winner—his second game-winner in three days. The NW Hawks led 1-0 after two periods, but Koen Lee tied the game early in the third.

Through 16 games, the Canadians hold a 6-10-0 record, tied for seventh with the Valley West Giants—though the Giants have three games in hand. GVC also sits just one point behind sixth-place Vancouver North East, but the Chiefs have four games in hand.

Brian Woolfenden is averaging a point a game with 16 points in 16 games, and he is tied with Maxwell Clemens for the team lead in goals with seven. Clemens and Noah Law are tied for second on the team with 10 points apiece.

Woolfenden’s 16 points also place him in a tie for eighth in the BCEHL U17 scoring race.

Next up for the U17 Canadians, a weekend series in Victoria on Nov. 15-16 as they take on the last-place Vancouver Island Royals (2-12-0), with both games held at the Ian H. Stewart Complex. Saturday’s game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., and Sunday’s contest is set for 8:50 a.m.
