The U17 AAA Greater Vancouver Canadians earned a split this past weekend in the opening games of the 2023-24 BCEHL regular season, beating the Vancouver North West Hawks 3-2 on Saturday before falling 4-3 in overtime on Sunday.

The Canadians, 1-0-0-1 with three points, are tied for third in the BCEHL’s U18 division.

On Saturday at the Hollyburn Country Club in West Vancouver, the Canadians overcame a pair of one-goal deficits before rallying to win 3-2 on Sorash Ramlal’s game-winner with 6:54 left in regulation. Luca Martyniuk tied the game at 1-1 seven minutes into the second period, and Nathan Van Hoeke’s goal early in the third tied the game at 2-2, before Ramlal notched the game-winner. Alan Peregrym picked up the win in goal for GVC.

On Sunday at the Richmond Olympic Oval, the Canadians trailed 3-2 before Trevor Chin tied the game with 7:03 left, but GVC went on to lose 4-3 in overtime. The Canadians trailed 1-0 after the first period before taking a 2-1 lead in the second on goals by Sorash Ramlal and Sean Wickenden. After the Hawks scored the next two goals to take a 3-2 lead, Chin tied things up on a nice setup by Helius Guan, who finished with two assists.

Through two games, Helius Guan leads the Canadians with three assists and is tied for the team lead in points with Sorash Ramlal, who has two goals and three points.

Saturday’s game is at the McArthur Island Sport and Event Centre at 6:30 p.m., and Sunday’s contest is at 1:00 p.m. at the Sandman Centre. Both games can be seen on playfullscreen.com.
