U18 Canadians Beat NW Hawks in Shootout in U18 Prep Island Classic
The U18 AAA Greater Vancouver Canadians had a bye week in the BCEHL schedule, but they were busy nonetheless, playing five games in Victoria, B.C., in the U18 Prep Island Classic from Nov. 14-17 (Thursday to Sunday).
The Canadians wound up going 1-4-0, winning their only game against the Vancouver NW Hawks 5-4 in a shootout on Saturday, with Luca Martyniuk and Cohen Smith (who both also got goals in the third period) scoring in the shootout round to secure the victory. In that game, GVC trailed 3-1 and 4-3 before Helius Guan sent it to overtime with the tying goal with only 3:11 remaining. Alan Peregrym made 34 saves in the game.

In the five games, Luca Martyniuk led the Canadians with three goals and four points. Helius Guan contributed with two goals and three points as well, one of seven players who recorded three points. Neven Heer, Vlad Ursache, John Bethell, Kaden Meyer, Sorash Ramlal, and Cohen Smith each also collected three points in the five games. Joshua Mytton and Hunter Vye-Weedon, meanwhile, each scored two goals. Ramal, Smith, Aidan Mark, Hudson May, and A.J. Abell also scored goals in the tournament.
Alan Peregrym finished the event with a solid .886 save percentage in four games, including a 4.75 GAA. He stopped 147 of 166 shots in the tournament, with both totals tops among all goalies who participated. Joshua Read, called up from the U17 club, appeared in one game during the tournament, facing 45 shots in that contest.
