U18 Canadians Continue Winning Ways with Three Victories in Three Days

by K.P. Wee

The U18 AAA Greater Vancouver Canadians continued their winning ways over the weekend, going 2-0-1 in their three games in three different venues from Friday to Sunday (Nov. 8-10).

GVC is now 6-1-2-1 in its last 10 contests, and owns a 7-4-2-1 mark through 14 games.

On Friday at Burnaby’s Scotia Barn, Alan Peregrym continued to shine as he allowed only one goal in a 1-1 tie against the Vancouver NE Chiefs. Helius Guan scored for the Canadians 6:18 into the second period, his third goal of the season.

On Saturday at the Canlan Ice Sports North Shore, Peregrym notched his first shutout of the season as GVC defeated the Vancouver NW Hawks 3-0 in the first of a home-and-home series. Hudson May, Hunter Vye-Weedon, and A.J. Abell scored for the Canadians, while the team’s penalty killing shut down the Hawks, who were 0-for-5 on the power play with the game still within reach.

Then, on Sunday at the Richmond Oval, Cohen Smith scored the overtime winner with 2:09 remaining as the Canadians completed a series sweep of the NW Hawks with a 3-2 victory. Erick Hoemberg and Luca Martyniuk scored first-period goals for the Canadians, and Joshua Read came up huge in goal with 31 saves. Read, called up from the U17 club for this contest, got the win after suiting up for the U17 Canadians just a day earlier against the U17 Thunderbirds. GVC limited the Hawks to just 1-for-8 on the power play and successfully killed off two 5-on-3 situations in the first two periods.

The U18 Canadians are now on a break from the BCEHL schedule until November 23-24, when they’ll compete in the U18 Showcase at the Abbotsford Centre, featuring all eight league teams. GVC will face Cariboo on November 23 and take on the NW Hawks again on November 24.
