U18 Canadians Knock Off NE Chiefs, Extend Undefeated Streak to Five
Alan Peregrym stopped 36 shots and lowered his goals-against average to a league-best 1.87 as the U18 AAA Greater Vancouver Canadians continued to roll, beating the Vancouver NE Chiefs 3-1 on Sunday at the Richmond Olympic Oval.
The Chiefs fired 20 shots at Peregrym in the third period and broke his shutout with 6:38 left in regulation, but the GVC goaltender was otherwise perfect on the day. In four of his last five games, he has given up exactly one goal. The 16-year-old netminder also leads the U18 division with five wins.
Hunter Vye-Weedon opened the scoring with 3:19 left in the first, and Hudson May scored short-handed midway through the second, as the Canadians took a 2-0 lead after two periods.
After the Chiefs broke the shutout with 6:38 left, A.J. Abell restored GVC’s two-goal lead with a power-play marker only 40 seconds later.
Although the Chiefs had numerous power-play opportunities in the final two periods and pulled their goaltender for an extra skater with 3:00 left in regulation, Peregrym and the Canadians were able to shut Vancouver NE down.
GVC is undefeated in its last five games, going 4-0-1 in that stretch. The Canadians (5-3-1) are now tied with the Chiefs for fourth place in the U18 standings.
Next up for the U18 Canadians, a home-and-home series on Nov. 2-3 against the Valley West Giants (7-2-0-1), who are tied for first place. Saturday’s game is at the Richmond Oval at 2:30 p.m., while Sunday’s contest is at the Langley Events Centre at 12:00 p.m. Both games can be seen on playfullscreen.com.
